Community Bluescapes

Pictures for the People produced a video for Richmond Council highlighting the Community Bluescapes project, a collaborative initiative to improve local green and blue spaces while increasing flood resilience and climate adaptation.

Engaging Communities to Shape Local Spaces

The video showcases how the project puts the community at the heart of environmental solutions, empowering local residents to identify challenges and co-create sustainable interventions. By tapping into residents’ knowledge and lived experience, the project ensures that solutions are practical, durable, and locally supported.

Addressing Climate Change and Flood Resilience

Community Bluescapes focuses on mitigating the impacts of climate change, including flooding, heatwaves, and droughts. The project uses natural infrastructure such as rainwater gardens, filtration wetlands, and improved drainage to manage water more effectively. By reconnecting rivers to floodplains and creating green corridors, the initiative enhances Richmond’s resilience to extreme weather events.

Collaborative Partnerships

The project is delivered in partnership with three local organizations and supported by DEFRA’s Flood and Coastal Resilience Innovation Programme. Richmond Council works alongside community centers, local friends-of-groups, and residents to implement projects such as rainwater harvesting, green space improvements, and river restoration.

Inspiring Local Engagement

The video emphasizes the co-production ethos, encouraging residents to shape their neighborhoods through hands-on participation in gardening sessions, climate cafes, and local workshops. This approach not only builds environmental resilience but strengthens community connections and fosters a sense of ownership over local spaces.

Lasting Environmental and Social Impact

Community Bluescapes aims to make Richmond more resilient, nature-rich, and socially connected, creating a lasting legacy where residents can actively influence the future of their local environment.
