Macmillan Cancer Support

Deaf Cancer Project

Macmillan identified a significant gap in support for Deaf people living with cancer—barriers in communication, access, and understanding meant that many felt excluded or invisible. Pictures for the People worked with Macmillan to create a film giving space to Deaf individuals and highlighting how the Deaf Cancer Support Project works with peers, in BSL, and through tailored services to reduce isolation and improve access. By combining interview-led storytelling with footage of peer support and sign-language moments, the project demonstrates how charity and accessibility-focused video production can amplify underrepresented voices. You can also explore other work we have done in the charity and inclusion sectors.

Bringing Real Stories Into View

We filmed the journeys of supporters Claire and Heidi, showing what it feels like to receive a diagnosis as a Deaf person, the challenges of accessing information, and the impact when communication finally works. By focusing on lived experience, authentic interactions, and human-centred storytelling, the final film positions the Deaf Cancer Support Project as an important step toward more inclusive cancer care.
