A Guide to Animation Length Online
One of the questions we get asked regularly is how long an animated video should be.
There isn’t one fixed answer, but if you’re creating animation for an online audience, around a minute or less is often a good place to start.
That’s not because every viewer has exactly the same attention span. It’s because animation can communicate a lot in a short amount of time, and the more information you add, the harder it becomes for your audience to take it all in.
Keep Your Animation Focused
Animation gives you a huge amount of creative freedom.
You can build environments that would be difficult or expensive to film, bring complex ideas to life and create visuals that are completely tailored to a brand.
That freedom can also make it tempting to include too much.
A one-minute animation with one clear message can be far more effective than a three-minute video trying to explain everything a business does.
Before starting an animation project, it’s worth deciding what you actually want the audience to remember. Once you know that, the script, visuals and pacing can all work towards the same goal.
Animation Is a Powerful Branding Tool
One of the advantages of animation is how much control you have over the visual identity.
Colours, typography, logos, illustration styles, characters and movement can all be designed around the brand.
This makes animation particularly useful for businesses looking to communicate complex ideas while maintaining a strong and consistent identity.
Keeping the video relatively short helps reinforce that identity rather than allowing the visual style to become lost beneath too much information.
Avoid Turning Your Explainer Video Into a Presentation
Animation is often used for explainers, internal communications and corporate strategy videos.
These projects can involve a lot of information, which creates a common problem: trying to fit everything into one film.
The result can be an animation that is technically impressive but difficult to remember.
If there are five or six important messages, consider whether they all need to appear in the same video. Breaking a larger subject into a series of shorter animations can often make the information much easier to understand.
It also gives you more content to use across different platforms.
Think About Where Your Animation Will Be Watched
The right animation length also depends on where the video will appear.
A short animation designed for LinkedIn or Instagram needs to communicate its message quickly. People are scrolling, often with plenty of other content competing for their attention.
A video embedded on a website can afford to be longer if the viewer has actively chosen to learn more.
An internal training animation may need even more time because the audience has a specific reason to watch it.
The platform and audience should therefore influence the creative approach from the beginning, rather than being considered once the animation is finished.
Shorter Doesn’t Always Mean Better
It’s important not to take the one-minute guideline too literally.
If your subject genuinely needs more time, cutting important information simply to hit an arbitrary duration won’t improve the video.
The goal is to remove anything that doesn’t need to be there, while giving the important information enough time to land.
A 90-second animation that clearly explains a complicated subject is better than a rushed 60-second animation that leaves the audience confused.
The best animation length is ultimately the shortest time needed to communicate the message properly.
How We Approach Animation at Pictures for the People
When we produce animation, we start with the message rather than the visuals.
What does the audience need to understand?
What do they need to remember?
Where are they going to watch it?
Answering those questions helps determine the structure, script, visual style and ultimately the length of the animation.
For online content, we generally recommend keeping things concise and focused, but every project is different. A good animation should be as long as it needs to be and no longer.
